FutureMUD Engine 2.10.0

Adds first-class signed communication, a connected media and surveillance system, and new powered access, storage and appliance tools for modern worlds.

Upgrade note: Apply the normal database upgrades before starting Engine 2.10.0. This release adds persistent data for signed languages, outfit skins, refrigeration and media recordings. If you use the supplied catalogue, update to Database Seeder 3.4.0 at the same time.

New Sign Language System

Signing is now a first-class form of communication alongside speech and writing. Players can use sign and signto, include signed language in emotes, and encounter signed text in descriptions. The engine keeps those messages visual: a character only receives them when they can actually perceive the signer and their gestures.

Builders can define signed languages, regional varieties, articulation requirements and mutual intelligibility, then grant them to characters and NPC templates. Signed-language values and events are also available to FutureProg, allowing automated content to respond to a conversation's language and variety instead of treating it as generic text.

New and Improved Audio-Visual and Media Item Types

The new media framework gives modern worlds a connected audio and video layer. Cameras, microphones, monitors, speakers, media decks, physical media, cables, splitters and computer media interfaces can route live feeds, play recordings and move material between local and networked devices. Recording policies support rolling, segmented and event-driven capture, with persistent files named in the game's own calendar.

Surveillance can now have real consequences: where a camera is configured to witness events, its live or recorded footage can carry that evidence to the people who view it. Output-volume controls use the existing spatial sound model for audible playback, while feedback protection safely stops noisy electronic loops instead of letting a media circuit overwhelm itself.

Portable digital recorders and implant A/V recorders extend that system to characters. Neural computer hosts, storage and terminals make it possible to build implanted media and computer workflows without treating an implant as a disconnected special case.

New Powered Appliance and Access-Control Item Types

Refrigerators, dryers, implant refrigeration and power banks provide practical examples of powered appliances and portable energy. Refrigeration and containment now participate more accurately in freshness, decay, morphing and surface-liquid timing, so cold storage behaves as part of the world's simulation rather than only as decoration.

Electronic access control now includes powered keypads, biometric scanners, keycards, keycard scanners and keycard writers. Builders can connect readers to normal signal automation or self-targeted locks, while trusted FutureProg and electrical workflows can manage credentials. This makes it practical to author access systems ranging from a simple staff door to an integrated secure facility.

Improved Builder Component Discovery and Outfit Templates

Component discovery can now be tailored to a world's technology level. Modern and futuristic component types can be hidden from the browsing list without changing existing prototypes, direct help, loading or runtime behaviour. Outfit templates can also preserve an intended item skin when they materialise, keeping a designed outfit visually coherent.
